There have been two major improvements in conditions of employment for casual workers over the last couple of years.
Firstly, all casual employees who have been employees on a regular and systematic basis for more that 12 months have the right to unpaid parental leave and a general right to return to the employment held prior to proceeding on parental leave at the expiration of the leave if there is work available.
In addition, a number of awards in a range of industries have both increased loading for casual workers and also introduced provisions which allow a casual employee to move into permanent employment following at least 6 months of casual employment of a regular and systematic basis. More information on how these provisions operate in the metal industry can be found at http://www.amwu.asn.au/
You should check with your union or contact the ACTU to see if these arrangements apply to you.
