FSU Welcomes Saturday Bank TradingDate: 12 May 2003
The Finance Sector Union has welcomed the introduction of Saturday bank trading as the first step in meeting the public's demand for more personal service. FSU NSW-ACT state secretary Geoff Derrick said that Westpac's decision to open branches on Saturdays was an important recognition that there was no substitute for face-to-face tellers. "This move clearly shows that someone has finally realised that Australians value a full range of banking services based on face to face service and supplemented by ATMs, phone and internet options. It is a real win for small business as well as working families", Mr Derrick said "After years of cutting back customer service, we welcome Westpac's decision to increase their staffing commitment. " It was particularly important to us to get assurances that Monday to Friday service would not cut back to pay for this initiative. Westpac has given that commitment." "We can only hope it extends to a broader commitment to more branches, more staff and better service for customers." Through their union, staff working on Saturdays have negotiated an agreement that delivers them penalty rates and an assurance they won't be forced to work Saturdays.
