Fire attack at Centrelink OfficeDate: 09 July 2003
Centrelink union calls for safety review following QLD fire attack The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) has called for a complete review of all existing security arrangements in Centrelink offices following a fire attack at the Inala office in Brisbane yesterday. During the incident a man doused a number of desks in a flammable liquid and set them alight. The office was evacuated, however three people were injured and furniture and carpet were damaged. According to CPSU National President Mark Gepp the incident highlights serious problems with Centrelink's current security arrangements. "People who were there say it's a miracle that there were not more serious injuries or even a fatality. Centrelink workers have consistently raised concerns that not enough is being done to ensure the safety of clients and staff. "Not a week goes by without some sort of potentially dangerous incident occurring. Centrelink staff have been assaulted, physically and verbally. They have been spat on. Office equipment and computers have been hurled around office," Gepp explained. The CPSU has written today to Centrelink CEO, Sue Vardon demanding 'an immediate and complete joint review of Centrelink's relevant safety and security policies and procedures.' For comment:
