Tassie hospitality smoking petitionDate: 15 September 2003
" Petitioners from across the community are telling Minister Llewellyn that they back Tasmanian hospitality workers who want a Smoke-Free healthy environment," LHMU Tasmania Secretary, David O'Byrne said. " They are calling on the Minister to completely ban smoking so these workers can breathe easy in their jobs." The petition was handed over today at the Grand Chancellor Hotel because it provides a good example of what can be done to create a better working environment if there is co-operation between management, workers and their union. " The Grand Chancellor is one of our most successful hotels with an active union membership who are proud of the fact that their workplace has banned smoking," LHMU State Secretary, David O'Byrne said. " Support for smoke-free hospitality outlets is definitely on the rise - the fact that we are able to easily collect nearly 2000 signatures for our petition is an example of the community support for our union's campaign. " The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia For further information: David O'Byrne, LHMU Tasmania Secretary, 03 6224 9288 or 0417 374 865
