Canberra childcare rallyDate: 15 September 2003
Child care professionals across Australia are campaigning for a new Charter of Rights for Quality Childcare. PARLIAMENT HOUSE RALLY DEMANDS REAL FUNDS FOR QUALITY CHILD CARE CENTRES
Time: 12.30pm" A rally in front of Parliament House in Canberra - calling for a better funding package - will be the key focus for our membership," LHMU Child Care Union Assistant National Secretary, Jo-anne Schofield said. Outside of Parliament House, from 12.30pm on Tuesday September 16, the faces of the children in childcare will be displayed with cutouts planted across the lawn. Addressing the virtual child protesters, as well as the hundreds of parents, professionals and community people, will be a range of key politicians, parents and child care professionals. Messages of support from childcare workers in centres across Australia will be read out at the rally. Parents and families will also be asked to show their appreciation of this important group of workers by signing thank you cards to the people who take care of their children. Child Care entrepreneurs now make the BRW Top 100" The new child care entrepreneurs are raking in the money from the new fad to commercialise these centres," Jo-anne Schofield said." The Federal Government's taxpayer funded child care benefit has become a cash cow for some greedy entrepreneurs," Ms Schofield warned. " As a result the profits being made by these kiddie centre entrepreneurs, are for the first time, registering them in the BRW's Top 100 rich Australians. " The boss of ABC Learning Centres, Edmund Groves, has pipped Nicole Kidman to become Australia's 4th wealthiest person at $146 million. " Over at the other big private sector child care chain, Peppercorn, the $57 million fortune made by Michael Gordon puts him in as Australia's 14th wealthiest person according to the BRW 100.
But a child care professional won't even earn as much as the centre gardener" Meanwhile a child care worker employed at either Peppercorn or ABC can only hope to earn on average between $12.57 an hour and $15.35 an hour." Librarians, supermarket checkout staff, gardeners, refuse workers and hospitality workers often earn more than a child care professional who has training and diplomas attached to their name. " Our campaign for parents and community people to sign up to a quality child care charter will help us to redistribute some of these extraordinary profits. " The charter will ensure that the rights of children and childcare workers are protected to provide the crucial foundation needed during the early years of children's learning and development."
