16 year old building worker deadDate: 15 October 2003
Australia's main construction industry trade union, the CFMEU, has renewed its call for industrial manslaughter legislation to be urgently introduced in NSW following the tragic death of a young building worker in Western Sydney today. The 16 year old fell 15 metres from a factory roof at Eastern Creek at 8AM this morning. The builder had provided no fall protection for the worker. It was the young man's third day at work. CFMEU State Secretary Andrew Ferguson has expressed outrage at today's tragedy. " We are calling on John Della Bosca to urgently introduce legislation to state parliament to lock up bosses whose management practices result in avoidable deaths like this. " The ALP state conference last week resolved that this issue of industrial manslaughter should be given legislative priority by the Carr Government. " We are sick and tired of the reckless behaviour of employers resulting in tragedy and heartbreak for families."
