Job security win in Tassie

Date: 16 October 2003

Tasmanian School Attendants union wins five-year job security agreement!

The School Attendants Union - the LHMU - has negotiated a five-year job security agreement with the State Government for School Attendants in Government schools.

Mass meetings of LHMU members this week in Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart endorsed the proposed agreement which means that there will be no contracting out of existing school attendant cleaning and groundskeeping work for the next five years.

" This agreement gives our members the security to plan their lives for the next five years," Tasmania LHMU Secretary David O'Byrne said.

" In the past Governments have proposed contracting out of school attendant work," he said.

" In 1991 we defeated the Field Labor Government's proposal to contract out school cleaning. In 1997, after a four day strike which closed down the school system we beat the Rundle Government's attempt to contract out."

" The Bacon Labor Government has recognised the importance of directly employed school attendants and agreed to a five year job security agreement without the need for any industrial action."

" The hundreds of LHMU members who attended the meetings endorsed the proposed agreement unanimously."

David O'Byrne paid tribute to the role of LHMU delegates who represent the union in the workplace.

" This agreement is testament to the strength of our union in the workplace," he said. The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
