OHS on passive smokingDate: 16 October 2003
" State governments have been put on notice following the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission yesterday endorsing the elimination of environmental tobacco smoke in the workplace "as soon as possible," Tim Ferrari, LHMU Assistant National Secretary said today. The National Commission has adopted the view that smoking be prohibited in all workplaces. They have noted that:
" This initiative by the Commonwealth body is most welcome and finally discredits employer arguments about ventilation or separate smoking areas indoors.
" There is now no other way forward than to act by way of comprehensive state legislation to fully protect worker health."
The LHMU proudly represents more than 130,000 hardworking women and men throughout Australia.
