2nd strike at Qld prisonDate: 09 February 2004
" Our members met this morning and resolved to take a firm stance against their employers push to cut back on our sick leave," LHMU Queensland Private Prisons Co-Ordinator Ron Simon said. " LHMU prison guards have resolved to have a series of rolling stoppages into next week after a second mass meeting tomorrow morning." Almost 500 low and medium security inmates at the privatised prison will be locked down and managed under a skeleton staff structure at the prison run by the US-multinational private prison firm Management and Training Corporation (MTC). " Union members are resolved to win a decent enterprise agreement - and are concerned that the company has not been prepared to make a deal after six months of talks," Ron Simon said. " We expect the company to change its tack when we next meet on Wednesday or face further turmoil at the prison." DETAILS OF STOP WORK MEETING AND PICKETVenue: A picket will be set up at the corner of Ivan Lane, Ipswich and the private road entrance to the prison. Ivan Lane comes off the Brisbane Valley and Esk turn off the Ipswich freeway. The picket will be set up from 8:45am. (Members will stop work at 8am and hear a report from union officials before proceeding to the picket.) Dates: Tuesday February 10th 2004. The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia For further information contact:Ron Simon on 0419 744 878 or 3016 2602
