Childcare urgent e-mail to Costello

Date: 06 May 2004

Child Care activists across Australia have launched a national campaign e-mailing Treasurer Peter Costello calling on him to support struggling child care workers in his Budget next week.

" Parents, childcare workers and community supporters are sending urgent e-mails directly to the Treasurer today to let him know we believe child care workers wage increases should be properly funded by the Federal Government in next week's Budget," Jo-anne Schofield, LHMU Child Care Union, Assistant National Secretary said .

Send an e-mail protest today
" Peter Costello can help end the crisis of low pay for childcare workers by ensuring that a child-focussed Federal Government Budget accepts responsibility to adequately fund quality childcare services. "

Internet cafes

The LHMU Child Care Union is underlining the importance of this campaign in an election year by hiring a number of internet cafes in marginal electorates and inviting members and supporters to the café to send off the protest e-mails.

" We are asking the community to send e-mails supporting childcare workers who are struggling to increase their wages.

" Currently many qualified childcare workers are on as little as $12-$13.00 per hour, and the crisis of low pay and shortage of qualified workers will continue unless the Federal Government commits the necessary funds in this year's budget.

" If the Federal Government continues to ignore this situation, the quality of childcare may suffer. It is a Federal Government responsibility to ensure that services can afford to pay decent wages to staff to ensure a high quality service for children, parents and the community.

" This is a particular issue in community based and not for profit services.

Victorian child care case not backed by Howard Govt

" Next Tuesday - on Budget Day - the LHMU Childcare Union begins, in Melbourne, the latest round of pay claims for workers in this important industry.

" Throughout Australia child care workers are extremely concerned, and frustrated, by the failure of the Federal Government to actively support these claims for fair and decent wages," Ms Schofield said.

Googling Peter Costello

To maximise attention to the LHMU Child Care Union campaign ads have been placed on the popular search engine Google - for the next few days whenever words such as child care, Peter Costello or Federal Budget are entered into the Google search an advert for the union campaign will appear on the search page.

People clicking on the ad will be taken immediately to the child care union protest form inviting people to send off an e-mail to Peter Costello demanding that he provide proper funding for child care workers' wages.

Politicians asked to put a fine comb through Budget using a magnifying glass

" We are also inviting local aspiring politicians to join us while we send off these protest e-mails," Jo-anne Schofield said.

" We will be advising these budding MPs to scrutinise next week's Federal Budget very carefully to ensure there is real good news for child care workers... not just election-time fluff. "

The politicians attending will be given a magnifying glass and comb to symbolise the importance of checking all the details of the Budget - and making sure it is not just election-time fluff which gets attention on the day.

80,000 childcare workers across Australia keenly watching Budget

Jo-anne Schofield said the nearly 80,000 child care workers across Australia are keen to make sure the Budget is subjected to careful analysis.

" Child care workers do not get anything like the respect and recognition they deserve. Our union members want politicians to put the budget under a magnifying glass and carefully go though it with a fine comb to ensure the details are actually a positive for the people who at the centre of our centres.

" The main funding source for child care is the Federal Government. It is time the Federal Government delivered a huge boost in funding for the people who actually deliver child care", Ms Schofield said.

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
