Scientist sceptical about fundingDate: 06 May 2004
Flagships are sailing...but what about the rest of the CSIRO fleet? The CSIRO Staff Association today cautiously welcomed the Government's $30 million Backing Australia's Ability initiative for CSIRO's Flagship research programs. CSIRO Staff Association President, Dr Michael Borgas, said: "It is an important statement of commitment by the Government to CSIRO's new research programs. However we are looking to greater Government investment in the rest of CSIRO in the Budget." CSIRO will receive a total $305 million for its Flagship Programs, spread out over the next seven years. The first $30 million instalment will be made from 1 July 2004. "The Flagships are less than 9% of CSIRO's total spending in the current financial year. The other 91% of CSIRO performs important scientific research for the nation and must not be forgotten," said Dr Borgas. "The Government's 2001 Backing Australia's Ability policy has failed to support CSIRO which is struggling for funds and losing key research staff," he said. "Last year's Federal Budget provided only a one-off $20 million, again only for the Flagships. The rest of our scientific effort needs to be recognised and supported," Dr Borgas added. "Investment in scientific research and development is vital for Australia's long term interests and this package is a commendable shot in the arm for encouraging business investment in R&D. "But this must not happen at the expense of other parts of the research community. Universities, government science agencies, other research institutions and business all have different roles to play. It is essential that this diversity be maintained.
