Aged Care In Good Hands?

Date: 09 May 2004

One of Australia's biggest aged care unions - the LHMU Aged Care Union - has warned that the indications are older Australians cannot expect a lot from Tuesday's Budget.

The LHMU Aged Care Union represents more than 10,000 workers in aged care facilities in Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Canberra and NT.

Howard Government does not understand Aged Care crisis

" This week's Budget leak about the Aged Care document in Peter Costello's statement - which will be titled 'Aged Care in Good Hands' - shows the reality is that few people in the Howard Government understand the crisis," Helen Creed, National President of the LHMU Aged Care Union said today.

" The truth is Aged Care couldn't be in worse hands under John Howard.

" The Aged Care sector is in crisis and our mums, dads, grandparents and other loved ones are being put at risk.

" Aged Care is in crisis with high profile providers like the Salvation Army marching away from the aged care sector. "

" What the Howard government and Minister Bishop preach is certainly not the reality in practice," Helen Creed said.

Minister Bishop has hours to turn Budget funding around

" Minister Bishop only has a few hours left to ensure that older Australians receive the funding so they can get the care they deserve.

" Media evidence is that even in these last minutes Howard Cabinet ministers are brawling about dollars - maybe Ms Bishop can turn things around today or tomorrow.

" Aged Care workers are not able to provide the care that they take so much pride in delivering as this government just seeks to take advantage of them.

Workers not given the time to spend with residents

" In fact the recently release Aged Care report stated that over 68% of workers were not able to spend enough time with the residents they are suppose to care for.

" Over 48% of workers are being placed under pressure to work even harder while nearly 60% of aged care workers believe they are underpaid for the care they give to older Australians.

" This government has let aged care standards slip from their grasp," Ms Creed said.

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
