All Out at Australia PostDate: 13 May 2004
It was standing room only at the first Mass Meeting of Australia Post workers for over 20 years. The Victorian Trades Hall Council ballroom was full of angry postal workers who delivered Australia Post a strident message 'we're not going to take it anymore.' CEPU Victorian Branch Secretary, Joan Doyle received a rousing reception as she gave the meeting with a report back on progress of meetings with Australia Post for the unions EBA 6 Campaign. Some of the unions claims include consultation before change occurs, the right to arbitration by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, no compulsory redundancies and conversion to secure employment for fixed term and casual workers. The meeting was also addressed by Len Cooper, the Victorian Branch Secretary of the CEPU (T&S) Division, Cooper advised the meeting that the Technical workers in Australia Post were also striking as part of the EBA 6 Campaign. Electrical Division Vic. Branch Secretary (ETU) Dean Mighell also congratulated the postal workers action and described it as 'long overdue'. Both Mighell and Cooper were cheered by the postal workers as they delivered their speeches of support. The meeting unanimously supported a resolution pledging further industrial action if their demands are not met, many of them took to the microphones to make their feelings known. It is clear that Australia Post has a very angry and frustrated workforce to deal with. The workers are demanding an EBA that secures the future of postal workers employed throughout all Australia Post divisions and a demand that Australia Post come to the negotiations in good faith.
