Tassie Casino workers win big

Date: 11 August 2004

Tasmanian casino workers have won a significant victory, which should help all hospitality workers on the holiday isle improve their wages and conditions.

" More than 800 workers at the State's two casinos showed that if you stand together, and face down the boss, you can win a stand-out agreement," David O'Byrne, Tasmanian LHMU Secretary, said today.

Huge victory

" We have won a huge victory with a 9% wage increase over 16 months.

" The Federal Hotel casino workers at the two sites in Hobart and Launceston were not going to be brow-beaten this time.

" They took a historic step when they went out on strike, for the first time ever, and showed the employer they were committed to winning a big pay victory.

Labour movement strengthened by organising effort

" The labour movement in this state will be strengthened by this win because casino workers made the decision we could have a win.

" But union members knew the victory would be ours only if the workplaces were well organised and we went out and recruited non-union workers to our cause.

Union grows

" In the weeks and months before the campaign was kicked off we recruited 250 new members - the boss knew we were strong and committed when we went into enterprise bargaining talks."

Highlights of the offer

- 9% wage increase over 16 months;

- increases in allowances;

- rollback of the two-tier wage system;

- a one off cash payment of between $50 and $100;

- improved HOST-Plus superannuation scheme rights;

- major review of classifications'

- the addition of a third Federal Hotel property - the Country Club Villas and Resort into the enterprise agreement

The Federal Hotel wages offer which LHMU delegates recommended that members accept was the fifth and ' final' offer which the company made to the union negotiating team after extensive talks which went over four months.
