Cleaners rally in SydneyDate: 01 September 2004
School cleaners from across the State will rally in Sydney next Wednesday to demand Bob Carr deliver on his promises of job security for nearly 7000 cleaners. " We expect to see a massive wave of cleaners, and their supporters, walking down Macquarie St on Wednesday," Annie Owens, LHMU Cleaners Union State Secretary, said. " Our campaign needs strong action by union members and their supporters to win our claim for job security and a fair contract." Strike starts Tuesday September 7Union members will start strike action at 9am on Tuesday, September 7, and return to work after midnight on Friday September 10.School principals will have to make a decision, as the strike goes on, to whether schools should be shutdown because of health concerns. The huge protest rally will start at midday on Wednesday September 8 from the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park North. " School cleaners are getting magnificent support from the community, parents, teachers, the media and even some MPs - but we've yet to change the Carr Government's heart on this issue," Annie Owens said. Parliamentary Question to MinisterIn the NSW Parliament the Australian Democrat Upper House MP, Dr Chesterfield-Evans, asked Minister Della Bosca today to provide reassurances that the nearly 7000 cleaners will maintain their jobs, their hours and their working conditions." Nearly 1000 people have sent protest e-mails to Bob Carr and his Ministers saying they support the school cleaners campaign, and they want a Labor Government to deliver job security.
Long serving loyal workforce will find it hard to get alternative work" The union has pointed out that these loyal, long-serving, low-waged school cleaners are a largely female workforce in their 40s and 50s who will find it hard to get alternative work - especially in rural and regional areas." One shocked school parent has told the union she felt the Carr Government's action was a bit like a lout, who shows no respect, and goes out and biffs his mother or grandmother.
Support from America" In the USA our sister union - the SEIU - has just put out a call to their members to send e-mail protests to both the Australian Ambassador and Premier Bob Carr, calling on the NSW Government to respect these low-wage workers rights to a decent standard of living."
Buses to SydneyUnion members and their supporters will be coming to Sydney by bus from across NSW. Members should call 1800 021 901( toll free) for daily updates and bus information.
