School cleaners strike tomorrowDate: 06 September 2004
" The State Government has made some important concessions to the LHMU Cleaners Union - but on the key issue of job security the government is not yet prepared to move," Annie Owens, LHMU Cleaners Union State Secretary said. Job security key stumbling block" The current offer does not secure our members' working hours." The cleaners - who are part-time workers earning between $13.50 and $15.80 an hour - need an offer of employment on their current hours. " Part-time workers depend on the hours they work to deliver an acceptable pay packet into their pockets. Forced cut in hours means a massive cut in pay" We've been told that while the cleaners may get to keep their jobs they could have to accept a very large cut in their existing hours." This threatens to turn into a massive cut in pay, which low-wage workers cannot afford to accept," Annie Owens said. " We had hoped that we could come to an acceptable agreement so we could avoid this strike - unfortunately it has not happened. " Most or our members rely on this pay packet to deliver a decent, but basic, way of life - they need the pay packet to feed themselves and their families and to buy a few little extras which all Australians should be able to expect as their right. Security of working hours" The failure of the government to provide security of working hours means we cannot advocate to our members that this strike should not go ahead, " Annie Owens." Our members are prepared to campaign hard to protect themselves and their families from this attack on their conditions. " We believe we have the community on our side: enough is enough in the rolling back of working families standard of living, especially when the low-waged have to take the brunt of these cuts."
