Cleaners job security camp'n updateDate: 10 September 2004
School cleaners will return to work from midnight tonight, after their first major strike in 11 years, and they're hoping that they won't have to repeat it again over the coming weeks and months. " The union has been involved in intensive talks with the State Government and top bureaucrats and we're hoping that this will result in an outcome which can satisfy all parties," Annie Owens, LHMU NSW Secretary, said. Ms Owens pointed out that media reports indicate several hundred schools have now been shutdown because of the dispute. " We understand that even more schools will be forced to shutdown today as principals make decisions about the health and hygiene threat to their pupils. " We support the NSW Teachers' Federation concerns that the Education Department may be bringing in casual cleaners who do not hold police checks to work on school premises. " Parents should know that our members undergo stringent police safety checks," Annie Owens said. " Our union members are part of the community. Like the rest of the community they are increasingly concerned that Governments are not adopting policies which defend and promote the job security of all Australians." The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout AustraliaFor more comment: Annie Owens, NSW LHMU Cleaners Union State Secretary 8204 7204 or 0425 214 881
