Airport security contracts crisisDate: 24 September 2004
Or the Federal Government should consider taking away the contract from the current security company, SNP, if they won't meet all their obligations to supply specialist security staff to protect travelers at Sydney Airport. " The LHMU Airport Security Union has for a long time complained to Sydney Airport, Qantas and the Federal Government about the use of " Frank's Boys" at our signature international airport, " Mark Boyd, LHMU Airport Security Union NSW Assistant Secretary, said. " Sometimes the airport, the airline and the Government deny it is happening. " Other times they promise to shut it down but then the same company - as evidenced by today's media reports - slowly creeps back in to work at the security stations. " Our records show that we first raised this issue - about the All Events Security Services company, popularly known in the industry as ' Franks Boys' - exactly two years ago.
Blind eye to Frank's Boys security guards" The authorities are turning a blind eye to a very dangerous practice." Travelers should have the right to know who is protecting them at the airport. " Our members complain regularly that many of these people do not know how to scan, but they can have responsibility for some very sensitive screening equipment. " If these people are not SNP airport security guards they should not be allowed to wear SNP uniforms. " They should wear 'Frank's Boys' uniforms - the uniform of the All Events Security Services company. " We understand that All Events is a company mainly specialising in providing bouncers to Leagues Clubs and other entertainment venues - this is a very different job to airport security.
Security Industry Council" Our union has raised this issue already with the Security Industry Council. We believe all security guards should be in the uniform of the company that employs them," Mark Boyd said. The Security Industry Council is a peak body for the industry with representatives from the major companies, employer groups, government, police and unions. " The public and the clients should know exactly who is providing the security at the airport.
Govt should take away the security contract" SNP should be investing in their own workforce," Mark Boyd said." SNP has the security contract at Sydney Airport. The company should have enough resources and staff to ensure they have available internally, at all times, the expertise and specialist knowledge needed at this key international gateway. They should not contract out any of their work. " If the Federal Government has any evidence that SNP is not taking their job at Sydney Airport seriously enough they should step in and act decisively. " The Federal Government should have on their table a proposal to take away this important security contract from SNP if they cannot meet all their obligations to their clients by providing the staff when needed. " The Federal Government must provide proof today that the non-SNP security guards have all been properly checked for appropriate security clearances, including their ASIC passes."
