Aged Care vision a gold medal winner

Date: 01 October 2004

Mark Latham's promise to provide a clear set of standards for the level and quality of residential care will create a new era in Aged Care, the LHMU Aged Care Union said today.

" The benchmark of care announced in the policy launch will set minimum staffing guide lines that are tied to providing quality care," Helen Creed, LHMU Aged Care Union, National President said today.

" This will ensure that older Australians receive the care that they deserve and that families can rest easy knowing their loved ones are getting the care they expect.

Aged Care Ombudsman

" Our union is particularly pleased with the idea of creating an Aged Care Ombudsman. This is important if Australians are to have confidence that issues involving the elderly are dealt with in a serious, effective and fair manner," Ms Creed said.

Rigorous spot checks for Aged Care facilities

The LHMU Aged Care Union welcomes the announcement that Aged Care facilities will be subject to rigorous spot checks to guarantee the highest standards of residential care.

" Until now Aged Care providers were able to access extra funding without any real controls over how the money would be spent.

Strict criteria in return for funding

" The Labor stance announced today will ensure that Aged Care providers will now have to meet set criteria in return for the funding - some of these criteria will highlight the need to pay competitive wages for staff, provide workplace training and ensure decent staffing levels.

" This of course is great news for Australia's 100,000 low-waged aged care workers - who earn between $13 to $15 an hour - working in this crucial industry.

More skilled workers

" More skilled workers in the Aged Care sector will ensure that the industry will be able to deliver quality care to residents; the plan to provide $1000 per trainee is a strong incentive to those looking at entering the industry.

" Mark Latham's Aged Care policy is Gold, Gold , Gold for our elderly - it delivers to residents, their families and friends, providers and the workforce," Ms Creed said.

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
