School cleaners conference

Date: 21 October 2004

Annie Owens LHMU NSW Secretary

Annie Owens LHMU NSW Secretary

NSW school cleaners have just won an important campaign to protect their jobs and working conditions, in the lead up to the 2005 State Government tender renewal for cleaning contracts.

The NSW Government school cleaning contract services over 2000 public education institutions throughout the state.

The LHMU Cleaners Union will sponsor in early December a key conference (see details below) where all major stakeholders will be invited to participate and discuss the outlines of the proposed new tender arrangements.

The State Government contract is one of the most valuable cleaning contracts available in Australia - and the union will be working with key departmental officers and other stakeholders in the development of the renewal tender.

" It is a critical time for our members, for teachers, the school communities and potential tenderers. This conference will provide a level playing field for all participants to openly discuss how we achieve the best possible outcome," Annie Owens, NSW LHMU Cleaners Union State Secretary said.

Over 6000 hard working LHMU members are responsible for the health and hygiene of these vital community assets. They ensure that our children, teachers and ancillary staff work in the healthiest possible environment.

" Our union is inviting all major stakeholders to participate in this conference and outline their perspectives on how the tender should operate," Annie Owens said.

" The LHMU Cleaners Union wants to promote a vision amongst all stakeholders that we can deliver a decent set of criteria which will provide both a healthy environment for our children and a safe, healthy and decent working arrangements for school cleaners.

" The union will be inviting representatives of Government Departments, parent organisations, teacher union representatives, contract cleaning industry corporations, as well as key health and medical groups."

To present your perspective at this conference, or to attend as a conference participant, please contact Cleaners Union Organising Co-ordinator Peter Campise 02 8204 7277 or e-mail Peter at:peterc@lhmu.org.au
