Hospital cleaners meet todayDate: 07 December 2004
Cleaners at Calvary Hospital in Canberra will meet again at 8am today to consider a management letter and decide whether to stay on strike indefinitely over concerns about job security and conditions. " Medical requirements demand the highest possible cleaning standards in our hospitals - the longer the cleaners are out the bigger the crisis at Calvary," LHMU ACT Cleaners Union Assistant Secretary, Lyndal Ryan, said today. LHMU cleaners want constructive talks" We want to sit down and talk to Calvary but no talks are happening yet." We do not believe it is in the interests of the community, the hospital or our members for this dispute to drag on." The cleaners presented a giant Christmas card to Mr Cusack yesterday morning and called on him to let his hard-working cleaners know what will happen to them after a change in the hospital's cleaning contract next year. Hospital should uphold the Xmas message" Calvary Hospital should uphold the Christmas message." They should not allow decent workers, who have come from a dozen nations to work here, and who have been loyal to the hospital for many, many years to be left wondering about their futures through the Christmas break." Many LHMU members have been working for ten to twenty years at Calvary Hospital. One LHMU member has worked at Calvary for 25 years. Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union cleaners want Calvary Hospital to join other hospitals and major institutions in the ACT by adopting Canberra's ground-breaking Cleaning Code of Best Employment Practice. Other Canberra hospitals can make a win-win deal why not Calvary?LHMU members can't understand what the fuss is about because the deal they agreed to with Calvary is much the same as that done with another major Canberra hospital, the John James Hospital. When John James was considering contracting out their cleaning thet had no difficulty in giving the LHMU an assurance that existing staff would be retained and that the incoming contractor would be required to be a signatory to the Cleaning Code of Best Employment Practice. John James Executive Officer, Phil Lowen, said: " We have a constructive relationship with the LHMU and we had no difficulty in giving them these assurances, after all these things are not only in the unions interest they are in the hospitals as well." Code wins major OHS award" This code includes a clause promoting job security and decent working conditions," Lyndal Ryan said." We are surprised that Mr Cusack is not eagerly standing with the LHMU on this matter as he was present earlier this year when WorkCover ACT awarded the Cleaning Code of Best Employment Practice its annual OHS prize." The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout AustraliaMore info Lyndal Ryan ACT LHMU Cleaners Union 02 6273 1238 or 0411 643 982
