Hospital cleaners win job security

Date: 08 December 2004

Cleaners employed by contractors at Calvary Hospital have won an important continuity of employment agreement from the hospital management.

" Now we will be allowed to relax and enjoy our Christmas holidays," Lyndal Ryan, LHMU ACT Assistant Secretary, said.

Cleaners return to work at 6am

" This wonderful agreement ensures that we can work constructively with the hospital and with any in-coming contract cleaner."

The bulk of LHMU cleaners will return to work at 6am this morning.

One key cleaner, who works in the hospital theatre area, returned to work at 4pm yesterday so that planned hospital operations would not be threatened.

Union members voted to return to work yesterday afternoon after receiving a letter from the Calvary Health Care chief executive, Robert Cusack, confirming the security of their jobs.

Code of Best Employment Practice Agreement embedded into tender process

Ms Ryan said she was particularly pleased that the hospital's chief executive, Robert Cusack, wrote in his letter to union workers that he can confirm that a key selection criteria in awarding the hospital cleaning contract will be that the Contractor is a signatory to the Code of Best Employment Practice Agreement.

Vulnerable workers get strong community and political support

The cleaners had strong support in their campaign from the Canberra community and key politicians.

In the ACT Parliament yesterday afternoon the Labor MP, Wayne Berry, congratulated the cleaners for taking a stand on behalf of all vulnerable workers employed by out-sourced contract companies.

" Contract workers are vulnerable, and none more vulnerable than those on low wages," Wayne Berry told the ACT Parliament.

" It's important that they know that there are others in the community who support them when they're involved in confrontation, so I went out to see them yesterday to hear their concerns."

Mr Berry reported the LHMU had contacted him in the afternoon to advise that Calvary management has agreed to honour their earlier commitments - these workers will still have jobs under the new contract.

Congratulations recorded in Parliament

" I want to say congratulations for highlighting your concerns as conscientious hard-working Canberrans, congratulations for your courage and your stand, congratulations to your union for defending you, congratulations to Calvary management for working to resolve the dispute.

" Finally to: Majvi; Dragica, Carlos; Stevka; Marika; Christina; Zora; Jacqueline; Maria; Zdravka; Slavica; Zora; Slavka; Danica and Mary - the cleaners at Calvary hospital - I hope you all have a happy Christmas knowing that you still have a job," Wayne Berry said recording in Hansard the names of the union heroes who had just won this dispute.

Agreement to deliver quality high standard cleaning

Lyndal Ryan said that if the new hospital cleaning contractor is committed to the Code of Best Employment Practice Agreement then LHMU members know they can deliver quality, high standards of cleanliness, which is so important in a health environment.

" The Code - which is a national cutting edge agreement backed by the industry and unions - delivers decency in the workplace.

Code chases shonky fly-by-night contractors out of Canberra

" It is the basic weapon we all have in common to ensure high standard companies deliver good services to the people of Canberra. The Code gives us a legal basis to ensure shonky fly-by-night contractors are chased out of the Territory

" The Code has already won a prestigious award from Workcover, recognising it as a fair way of delivering good OH&S standards for all workers."

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
