90 union websites in global comptDate: 23 December 2004
Voting has begun for the eighth annual Labour Website of the Year competition, sponsored by the London-based LabourStart project. The competition, first held in late 1997, is a unique event which highlights the growing use of the Internet by the world's trade unions -- and the growing sophistication of trade union websites.
Australian sites in the lead - at the momentAt the moment two Australian union website - the CPSU and the LHMU - are leading the voting race, though the big Canadian union, CUPE, who won the competition last year is threatening to take over the lead.99 websites appear on this year's ballot, from trade unions in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Haiti, India, Iraq, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the UK, the USA, and Zimbabwe.
Iraqi union's website participatingThe participation of the website of the newly-formed Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions as well as that of the embattled Zimbabwe unions, is particularly significant.Among Australian union sites actively competing this year are the ACTU; the AMWU; APESMA; CPSU; LHMU; MUA and Workers Online. Last year, votes were cast for 468 different union websites. The winning site belonged to Canada's largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Three Australian unions made the top ten last year. Voting forms can be found at www.labourstart.org. Voting ends on 15 January 2005 and the winner will be announced the following day. Daily updates may be heard on LabourStart's online radio station. LabourStart is the online trade union news and campaigning website, founded by Eric Lee in 1996. It publishes trade union news in fifteen languages using a network of more than 300 volunteer correspondents. Its news is syndicated to over 550 union websites around the globe.
