Church cancels Xmas for low-paidDate: 23 December 2004
The Little Sisters of the Poor, who run two Western Australian nursing homes, are refusing to pay low paid aged care workers, caring for the most vulnerable in our community, their proper Christmas and New Year bonus. " Whilst the nuns who run these nursing homes on behalf of the Catholic Church are celebrating one of their most holy days, our members will not be receiving one cent extra for all the extra care and support given to aged care residents over Christmas and the new year break" Sue Lines, LHMU WA Assistant Secretary, said today. " Other Catholic run nursing homes are paying staff bonuses for Saturday and Sunday and the penalty rates which apply on Monday and Tuesday and New Year's Day holiday.
Can't believe nuns would cheat low paid workers at Xmas time" We cannot believe that nuns who are supposed to nurture and support the needy could cheat low paid workers at this time of the year,"Sue Lines said." It's a sad day when the Union has to prosecute the Catholic Church to get workers their proper entitlements. We urge the nuns to reconsider their decision and pay workers for these holidays," Ms Lines concluded.
