MUA widow donates union aid appeal

Date: 31 December 2004

The widow of a former wharfie has rung the Australian union aid agency - Union Aid Abroad APHEDA - to offer $1000 to the special tsunami aid appeal.

" This amazing woman rang our office this morning after she heard ACTU President, Sharan Burrow, on the radio.

" She said it's working people who are worst hit by this disaster, and she wanted to help Asian workers through the union aid agency," Peter Jennings Executive Director of Union Aid Abroad APHEDA said today.

" Since we announced the special trade union movement appeal - and since Sharan called on union people to donate - we've been flooded with calls.

" We've called a number of the aid agency's Directors back off their holidays so they can help us field the calls."

The Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA office is open and can provide extra information on fund-raising activity, or collect donations on 1800 888 674 or 02 9264 9343

Union workers across the nation are taking action into their own hands

At the Sheraton-on-the-Park Hotel in Sydney LHMU members are collecting money for a union member who lost family in Sri Lanka.

The hotel union activists have called on local management to match dollar-for-dollar money raised by the union at this site.

NSW LHMU Secretary, Annie Owens, said her union backed this important initiative.

" Where ever our members are raising money in the workplace employers will be called upon to match workers' donations," Annie Owens said.

NSW LHMU financial members, whose families are directly affected by the tsunami crisis, are being asked to contact Mark Boyd, the NSW LHMU Assistant Secretary - at 02 8204 7204 or nswlhmu@lhmu.org.au - to discuss possible financial help and support.

The LHMU has now donated a minimum of $30,000 to the trade union initiative with the LHMU National Secretary, Jeff Lawrence, predicting more money will be raised by his 130,000 union members.
