3 Oz unions in top ten popular voteDate: 18 January 2005
Three Australian unions came in the top ten for the annual LabourStart LabourStart global popular vote for best trade union websites. The NSW Teachers Federation came into second place. The LHMU came third and in 7th place the CPSU. The huge half-million member Canadian Union of Public Employees won the contest for the second year in a row. But size is not necessarily the key to winning this contest. One of the biggest unions in the world, the 1.4 million member Teamsters actively promoted this contest to their members and came in at 5th place. More than 8000 people cast a vote - the highest ever votes recorded in this contest - for 525 trade union websites around the world.
International Panel awardThis year, two awards were given out. For the first time, LabourStart assembled an international panel of experts to judge and pick one site to win the award. The winner this year, as chosen by the panel of experts, is the Self Employed Women's Association in India. This was the 8th annual contest run by LabourStart. Interest in the voting has increased from year to year. While 8343 votes were registered this year, nearly 3000 more than last year, just five years ago only 300 people voted.
