Valentine's protest againt violenceDate: 13 February 2005
Senators invited to attend Queanbeyan, NSW, Valentine's Day rally to protest assault of female union organiser A women-only union rally will be held outside a Queanbeyan workplace on Monday, February 14 ( Valentine's Day) to hear the allegations of a violent assault - now being investigated by police - on an AMWU female organiser. This awful, ugly incident highlights issues about right of entry and safety in the workplace ...which is now threatened by the Howard Government.
MEDIA ALERT Date: February 14, 2004 Violence against women in the workplace" Union activists are concerned about violence against women in the workplace being ignored," Corrie McKenzie, Canberra women's activist said. The women attending the rally will be wearing all white and will present a card to the boss of Custom Ladders demanding he sign it and apologise.
Labor Shadow Minister to attend rallySenator Penny Wong , the Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Participation, has already indicated she will attend the rally.Police are now investigating the 30-year old AMWU female organiser allegations of being physically assaulted last month when she was seeking to respond to workers concerns about numerous OH&S problems.
Has the boss got the guts to say sorry to MumThe official's mother will attend the rally hoping the boss will have the courage to face her and apologise for the way he treated her daughter.Local police were called at the time of the incident and are now expected to charge the factory boss with assault.
Right of Entry laws" John Howard's plans to severely restrict the right of entry of union officials will isolate workers and leave them in genuine danger," Lyndal Ryan, LHMU ACT Assistant Secretary said today.
Invitation to Senators" We're inviting female members of the Senate Inquiry into Right of Entry laws to come to Queanbeyan to hear about these concerns." Even under current laws bosses can inhibit unions from their democratic rights to represent working people. " Howard will make it even harder for people to have their voices heard at work."
