Health boss asked to do security job

Date: 25 February 2005

South Australian hospital security workers have issued a challenge to the CEO of the State Health Department, Mr Jim Birch, to come spend a day with them - and then say they are not worth being treated the same as their public sector counterparts.

The union has also mounted a community campaign to demonstrate to the Health Department that South Australians do not believe that people working in these sensitive jobs should be among our lowest paid.

Hundreds send protest e-mails

Already around 200 people from Adelaide and across the nation have sent Mr Birch a protest e-mail to show their support for the security workers.

Hospital security workers face daily violence

The security officers, employed by security contract companies to work in the public health sector, daily face increasing incidents of violence, and new security issues: but they are among the lowest paid workers in our public hospital and health system.

" These security officers, who work at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Women's and Children's Hospital and Noarlunga Health Service, are responsible for spotting dangers and ensuring our safety when we visit our hospitals," Mark Butler, LHMU State Secretary said.

The challenge to Jim Birch - help us just one day on the job

The 100 LHMU members have written to Mr Birch and invited him to help them one day:

- attend a violent restraint,

- co-ordinate a helicopter landing of the retrieval team,

- accessing areas and unlocking doors for staff,

- staffing the switchboard,

- provide staff escorts on and off the site,

- transfer a patient from police to hospital care.

" At the same time Jim Birch expects our people to be paid $1.79 per hour less than public sector workers doing this work," Mark Butler said.

" The list of duties we've offered to share with the Health Department chief executive are just a small part of the tasks undertaken by security officers in public hospitals.

Union asks for quick answer on wage parity claims

" The union supplied an even more extensive list to Departmental officers last year - but our claim for wages parity has been ignored."

.The union has called on Jim Birch to give their wage parity claims urgent consideration - and reply by COB on Wednesday March 2.
