Childcare bosses NSW take away feast

Date: 27 February 2005

Childcare employers in NSW are out of step with community expectations, the NSW LHMU Child Care Union President, Jim Lloyd warned today.

The Child Care Union leader was reacting to the 29-point list of demands issued by representatives for the NSW centres, in an attack on a pay equity claim by NSW childcare union members.

Centre operators don't want to move forward

" The centre operators don't want to move forward, and work co-operatively with the union to improve standards in this crucial industry." Jim Lloyd said.

" The employers have put forward a slash-and-burn plan to attack the wages and conditions of some of the lowest paid workers in this State. They have shown little or no respect for the professional work done by their staff."

Employers want childcare wages cuts

An employer application in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission, lodged to counter child care union claims, would see significant cuts to the wages and conditions of the state's childcare workforce.

" The long queues for childcare places in this State are in large part because of massive shortages of qualified childcare workers - and that, in turn, is largely due to the low-wages paid to this crucial group of workers.

Community backs pay increase for low-paid childcare workers

" The community supports pay increases for the 15,000 NSW childcare workers who are paid as low as $12 per hour," Jim Lloyd said.

" Our union has recently won historic pay increases for this group of workers in Victoria and the ACT, and we're now moving forward to a major pay equity case in NSW," Jim Lloyd said.

The NSW LHMU Child Care Union lodged the paper work for this important case with the NSW Industrial Relations Commission on Friday.

Effective campaign needed to win pay increase

" The employers in NSW are fighting child care workers and their union all the way," Jim Lloyd said.

" Childcare workers have seen that by working together in an effective and concerted campaign Victorian and ACT members have won important pay increases.

Childcare workers joining the union

" Now the childcare workforce in this State are joining the union.

" We know together we can win the important community support which will deliver good pay increases for our people," Jim Lloyd said.

Key take away demands from childcare employers

Childcare employers have responded to the NSW LHMU Childcare union's push for pay equity by issuing a 29-point take-way list including:

- Demanding their workers do 10 hour shifts every day - without any overtime payments;

- Insisting part-time workers work full-time hours without any overtime pay;

- Asking to delete a range of important allowances for uniforms, first aid etc now paid to childcare workers;

- Calling for accumulated sick leave rights to be capped;

- Relying on more casual workers to staff childcare centres; and

- Telling casual workers to take split shifts without penalties;

- Remove any provision for paid study and examination leave to improve workplace standards

Neanderthal attitudes

" These Neanderthal attitudes will be thrown out of the commission," Jim Lloyd said.

" But this failure by NSW childcare employers to take a positive and pro-active stance to pay equity will mean even further delays to childcare pay increases in this state."

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
