Wattyl smears workers by 'blob' talkDate: 04 April 2005
Inflammatory language used by top Wattyl Paint's management has aggravated workplace relations at thismajor Australian paint factory's sites across five states. Union members are angered by ugly, disrespectful, tactics used by Wattyl when they issued instructions referring to their 350 workers as "blobs" who should not be allowed onto worksites, LHMU Assistant National Secretary, Jo-anne Schofield, said today.
E-mail instructions" An e-mail was sent out last week giving instructions on how to ' prevent a blob from entering the site'" Top management are talking about loyal workers - who have proudly worked to make the brand a success - as if they were expendable splotches, dribbles and smudges to be wiped out at will," Ms Schofield said. 72 hour strike" Union members are now on a 72 hour strike." The ugly language being used in the current enterprise bargaining talks has resulted in widespread sympathy from the rest of the workforce.
Union pickets respected" Our union pickets are being respected by even the white collar workers who are not unionists," Ms Schofield noted." The extraordinary ' blob' instructions underlines the fact that Wattyl is not negotiating in good faith with its workforce. Leaked briefing paper" This insulting language comes on top of a leaked Board briefing paper which proposed deliberately withholding information about a planned restructure from 2005-2008 - which involved plans to shut down a NSW factory site." The Board paper suggested that this guile be used so as to provide an extra advantage in current enterprise bargaining negotiations with LHMU members. Spy photos in Federal Court" Now Wattyl is taking union members to the Federal Court using spy photos and secret notes based on overheard comments in an attempt to further threaten their workforce." None of these tactics by Wattyl management will help us to return to a sane workplace relationship, " Ms Schofield said. Petition to the Board calls for sane workplace and fairness and good faith" Union members are presenting a petition to the members of the Wattyl Board saying that while enterprise negotiations are tough they should be done on a basis of fairness and good faith." We are calling on the Board to immediately intervene to restore respect to the relationship between senior managements and its employees. " Workers base their futures on the company's success.
Board should issue instructions" We believe the Board should instruct management to conclude the EBA so we can more forward to face the future together based on a positive and respectful partnership."For further details:Jo-anne Schofield, LHMU National Assistant Secretary 8204 7231 or 042 524 2684
