200 NSW childcare workers win!Date: 14 April 2005
Childcare workers showed this week they wouldn't be treated like pawns on a chess board - pushed around at will without any consideration of their needs, NSW LHMU Child Care Union President, Jim Lloyd, said today. Childs Family Kindergartens (CFK) are one of the fastest growing private childcare operators in NSW, swallowing up private centres across the state. They had a remarkably profitable listing on the Stock Exchange last week when it became the latest childcare listing on the Exchange. Unilateral changes" CFK came into their newly acquired centres making unilateral changes. No discussions with a workforce who have often served the local community with dedication for more than ten years," Jim Lloyd said." But childcare union members have made sure CFK understands the community won't stand for dedicated workers having to accept cuts which might affect the quality of services provided to the local kids. Angered by plan to put all the staff on probation" Many of the 200 long-serving committed staff in the 39 newly acquired centres were angered when the company announced they were putting them all back on probation - without any consideration of their years of service."These childcare professionals were not only being told they were all on probation but: - All accumulated sick leave to disappear; - Sick leave rights were to be cut back to five days as though they were all Day One employees; - Paid lunch-breaks were to be abolished; - Annual leave rights were threatened " It really was a major blow. So these committed professionals organised for themselves a strong union voice - and then built a winning strategy," Jim Lloyd said. We were ready to play to our strengths" At the same time that CFK was winning plaudits at the Stock Exchange these new LHMU Child Care Union members told their new boss they had the winning strategy - with significant union strength in his centres." We were ready to play to our strengths if the workplace got tough," Jim Lloyd said. No unilateral changes and cuts to working conditions" Our people were not going to accept unilateral changes and cuts to working conditions without any discussion and involvement."" Our new members demonstrated it with a flood of petitions and letters. Wave of concern among parents and community" It created a wave of concern among parents and the surrounding community who use the centres and were worried what would happen to the professional standards they expected." These two hundred childcare workers have just shown they're not chessboard pawns. We don't have to be chessboard pawns" We can be Kings and Queens and Knights by organising a strong union voice to win power on the workplace chessboard," Jim Lloyd said." We've all won an agreement with CFK that protects childcare workers wages and conditions. NSW pay equity case" Now our members are eager to build on this win by getting behind the unions' pay equity case in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission." That case could result in wage increases of over $100 per week for the state's 15,000 childcare professionals," Jim Lloyd said. Growing childcare movementThe CFK union members are part of a growing movement of childcare workers across Australia.They are organising unions in the workplace to improve workplace conditions so we can create stable career-oriented professional jobs to create better services for our community's children.
Improve services so parents can feel safe going to work"Working together we can improve services so the parents in our community can go to work and support their families knowing that their children are cared for, loved, and safe," Jim Lloyd said.
