Tas Libs Destroy 300 Jobs Over VSUDate: 23 May 2005
Senator Eric Abetz should know that the state's voters did not put him on the Government benches so he could destroy the jobs of many good Tasmanians, says the LHMU. Up to 300 permanent and casual staff employed by the Tasmanian University Union as cleaners, bar workers, counsellors, housing officers and event staff face a bleak future due to the obsessive desire of prominent Liberal members of Federal Parliament to outlaw student unionism. Members of the union for the 300 employees - the LHMU - protested against the planned introduction of voluntary Student unionism outside Senator Eric Abetz's office in Davey St today. MHA David Bartlett addressed the protesters and gave his full support to the campaign to save Tasmanian jobs.
E-mail Senator Eric Abetz today!LHMU secretary David O'Byrne said the proposed law was unnecessary and a simple case of blind dogmatic ideology that ignores the human consequences. "It is time for Senator Abetz to get over his student politician days and move on," he said. "His dogmatic approach will cost Tasmanian's jobs. "This is hardly the approach of a reasonable or caring Government - putting ideology above people. "We call on Senator Abetz to drop his dogmatic approach now". Members of the Union have also begun an email campaign to make sure Senator Abetz gets the message that his desire to settle old scores from his own days as a pretend politician at the University of Tasmania will have a real human cost to Tasmanians.
E-mail Senator Eric Abetz today! The Tasmanian University Union provides a range of services to students - including food, bar, assistance with student housing, counselling, disabled student assistance, entertainment, societies etc. In providing these services the Union provides work for nearly 300 Tasmanians - including breadwinners and students who need to work while studying.
