Anglicans and job morality

Date: 05 June 2005

Cleaners Union members asked Anglican worshippers at the St Paul's Cathedral in Canberra, today to reflect on the morality of allowing low-waged contract cleaners to have their pay cut at Canberra's Anglicare retirement homes.

LHMU Cleaners Union members handed out leaflets at the Cathedral on Sunday morning, asking parishioners to show their support for cleaners by ringing Bishop Browning.

Bishop must fix the ethical issues at the retirement home

" We want Anglicans to ask the Bishop to use his influence to fix the ethical dilemma at the retirement homes," Jose Munoz ACT LHMU Cleaners Union organiser said.

" We are also inviting the parishioners to ring our office to register their support on this important moral issue.

Company taken to Human Rights Office

" These workers, who are already amongst the lowest paid in Canberra, earning less than $25 000 a year, should be able to expect to look to the Church to maintain ethical and decent standards for their workforce.

" The new company who won the contract at Anglicare last year - and has decided to cut the pay of all their pre-existing staff - has only been in Canberra twelve months and already the union has had to take them before the ACT Human Rights Office over a discrimination case.

Unlawful sacking claim

" And on Monday we will be lodging a claim of unlawful termination on behalf of another cleaner, against the company: Nationwide Services," Jose Munoz said.

Cleaners want Bishop to fix moral question of low-paid workers

" Since November this company has underpaid our members by more than $10,000 - money they can ill-afford to lose.

Employ only ethical cleaning contractors

" We have asked the Anglicare Retirement Service to deal only with companies who maintain ethical standards and have signed the ACT Cleaning Industries Code of Best Employment Practice.

" The Anglican Church has a proud history of standing up for the disadvantaged of our community. Cleaners are already low-paid workers.

" Now this company, Nationwide, have seen to it that they are the lowest paid cleaners in the ACT!!!
