Canb clubs must not punish workers

Date: 15 June 2005

The ACT Clubs industry faces challenging financial times - but they should not take it out on their workforce, the ACT LHMU warned today.

Changes to gaming legislation in relation to note acceptors appear to have had the desired result on the community in reducing gambling - this however has had an adverse affect on Club revenue, ACT LHMU Clubs organiser, Yvette Berry, acknowledged today.

The Clubs Union organizer was responding to media reports today, which suggested a crisis for the Canberra industry,

" Clubs have indicated that they will be looking their operational costs and this means workers in these Clubs face an uncertain time ahead," Yvette Berry said.

"Clubs should not be cutting wages or conditions of their employees as part of their plan to cope during these tough times. They should instead be innovative and if necessary reinvent themselves to get their market share in this new environment," Yvette Berry ACT Clubs Organiser said today.

"Community Clubs have a long standing history of providing decent wages and conditions for their employees these should not be compromised because of the cost involved in complying with regulations."

"The union will be working with the ACT Government and ACT Clubs to ensure ongoing dialogue and consultation in the management of the changing environment that the industry faces."
