Unions Welcome Bluescope IR ConcernsDate: 17 June 2005
The South Coast Labour Council has welcomed comments in today's Australian newspaper by Bluescope Steel voicing concerns over the Federal Government's proposals to abolish the existing NSW state system of industrial relations and to replace it with a unitary national system. South Coast Labour Council President and AWU Branch Secretary Andy Gillespie said, "South Coast unions welcome the statement by Bluescope voicing concern over the proposed federal takeover of the NSW industrial relations system" "It is no secret that we haven't agreed with many positions adopted by Bluescope regarding industrial relations in recent years. So this really does say something about the Federal Government's proposals and the lack of support that they have." "We now have the Illawarra's largest and most prominent employer publicly expressing concerns over the Federal Government's power grab over workplace laws." "If the largest boss doesn't support the Federal Government's proposed reforms you have to wonder whether peak employer organizations who have been so quick to support the Government's proposals are out of touch with their own constituency."
