Nappies bombard Gvt MPsDate: 28 June 2005
A West Australian Federal MP, Michael Keenan, will have his office transformed into a childcare centre today - and be bombarded with 500 nappies - as part of the National Week of Action against the Howard Government's planned industrial laws. Childcare union members will set up a sandpit and swings outside of the MP's electorate office, and 500 nappies suspended by balloons will be released in the office of MP Michael Keenan. Qualified childcare workers will supervise children, while union activists will move in and occupy the area. About 70 activists are expected to attend the protest.
Relentless campaigning in marginal electoratesThe protest is being conducted by the LHMU Childcare Union to demonstrate that Liberal Members of Parliament, such as Mr Keenan, hold their seat by a narrow majority and can look forward to relentless campaigning against them if they support Howard's industrial laws."We are occupying Michael Keenan's office and turning it into a childcare centre to demonstrate the real concerns of our people," LHMU Child Care Union WA Secretary, Dave Kelly said today.

Childcare workers will be worse off under Howard laws" Childcare workers are exactly the sort of workers who will be worse off under Howard's new laws, because:- Nearly all childcare workers are paid on base award rates and rely on national safety net adjustments, which under the new "Fair Pay Commission" be lower; Not enough affordable childcare" We also want this event to emphasise that the Federal Government is pushing mothers to work when there is not enough affordable childcare."Finally, this action will underline that this office might be vacant in a couple of years if Mr Keenan doesn't watch himself, and it could be just the place for a childcare centre to set up."
Part of National Week of Action to protest dismantling country's workplace standardsThe occupation of Michael Keenan's office by the LHMU is part of the ACTU National Week of Action against the Federal Government's dismantling of the country's industrial laws." We want to make it clear what Liberal parliamentarians in marginal seats can expect in their electorates - particularly intensive education about these issues.
Campaign to swing votes against politicians who subvert job security" We expect working families will support this education effort and cast their votes against any politician who subverts their job security." If the Howard Government wants a fight, we'll give them one. In their own backyard," Dave Kelly said.
