WA EN's lead the way

Date: 18 July 2005

For the first time Enrolled Nurse LHMU members in the growing 'for profit' aged care sector have secured an agreement delivering a career path and professional recognition.

Enrolled Nurse LHMU members at other sites operated by the Western Australia for-profit aged care provider, Hall & Prior, are now seeking to apply the new career structure at their workplaces.

Give a Buck campaign for aged care workers

At the same time, all LHMU members across fourteen Hall & Prior sites are campaigning for $1 an hour increase, and security of their current conditions in the "Value our aged. Pay a fair wage" campaign.

Anna Rapic is one of the LHMU Aged Care Union members who secured the ground-breaking agreement in Albany.

Securing a better deal

"We have made a start but we need to be organised if we want to secure a better deal for workers in aged care, " Anna Rapic said.

" Union members have been working hard for some time to get recognition of the professional work done by ENs in aged care.

Albany a step in the right direction

" The agreement at Clarence Estate in Albany delivers a step in the right direction.

"Aged care is a big sector, and it is only getting bigger.

" As ENs we have to make sure we are standing up so that our skills are not being taken for granted.

" The agreement contains a new career structure which gives specific recognition to the work in aged care.

" Wage rates have also been renegotiated: Level 1 $609.10 Level 2 $625.00 Advanced Skill Enrolled Nurse $680.00"
