Having yellowcake and eating it tooDate: 26 June 2006
John Howard's "full-blooded" debate on nuclear power is looking very one-sided, says author and former Australian diplomat Richard Broinowski. "The broad pre-disposition of most of Mr Howard's experts seems to be that nuclear power can save the planet from global warming, while uranium will supply Australia with a handy little export earner", said Professor Broinowski. "Meanwhile, the dangerous international climate in which increasing quantities of Australian uranium are to be traded seems hardly to have been acknowledged." "The debate should also focus on the incipient collapse of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the difficulty of tracing Australian uranium, the ineffectiveness of facility surveillance, the build-up of arsenals by nuclear powers, and the possibility of nuclear terrorist attacks." Professor Broinowski is the author of Fact or Fission? The Truth about Australia's Nuclear Ambitions (Scribe, 2003); a former Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, to the Republic of Korea, and then to Mexico, the Central American Republics and Cuba; and is presently adjunct Professor of Communications at the University of Sydney. Richard Broinowski will talk on the question of nuclear power at a public forum hosted by the Evatt Foundation in Sydney on Wednesday evening, 28 June. Professor Broinowski will be joined by Frank Muller, a Professor of Environmental Studies at UNSW who was formerly head of greenhouse policy in the NSW Government and served on the Working Group of President Clinton's Council for Sustainable Development. This is an Evatt Sunset Seminar at the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, 280 Pitt Street. Drinks will be available from 5.30 pm, the seminar will commence at 6.00 pm, and the discussion will conclude at 7.00 pm. FURTHER INFORMATION:
