Summit Targets Manufacturing

Date: 05 September 2006

A manufacturing and related industries summit held yesterday in Wollongong brought together a range of idustry leaders, unions, experts and other stakeholders and resolved to form a regional body to promote and develop the manufacturing industry in the Illawarra.

The summit organised by the South Coast Labour Council and key affiliates in manufacturing, heard a range of speakers including, Professor Roy Green, the Dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Paul O'Keefe, a senior executive from Smorgan Steel, ACTU President Sharan Burrow and Australian Industry Group State Director Mark Goodsell.

South Coast Labour Council Secretary, Arthur Rorris, said,

"A common theme throughout the summit was the need for a strong and coherent industry policy on the part of governments in Australia at all levels".

"All the international examples showed that thriving manufacturing industries in both Asia and Europe were suppported by hands on government planning and long term industry development strategies."

"The key outcomes of the summit were firstly to establish a regional body of stakeholders including unions, industry experts, community leaders and the manufacturers themselves to drive a regional strategy to promote and develop the manufacturing industry"

"Another outcome was to seek regional representation on the NSW Manufacturing Council which the Iemma Government is commited to establishing this year."
