Sydney hotel owner should show heartDate: 05 June 2007
More than 30 hotel workers are demanding the new owners of the big 443 guest room Rydges Hotel at World Square show a bit of respect to their workforce. The hotel has just changed ownership and the new owners, the wealthy immigrant success story Schwartz family, have decided to contract out the housekeeping department - without talking to the workforce.
Long-serving staff should be treated better" Many of the workers have been there for more than 8 years and believe the new owners should treat their long service and loyalty with a little more respect," Rebecca Reilly, NSW LHMU Hotel Union Lead Organiser said." There has been no consultation with the workforce in relation to this change.
Highest form of charity to deliver justice to workforce" The Schwartz Family prides itself on its charitable work - especially in the hotel industry as the sponsor of Hotels Have Hearts which raises money for good causes." The Schwartz Family Foundation gives away lots of money to worthwhile causes - but surely the most worthwhile cause is the treatment of their own staff. " As the new owners of the World Square Hotel they should show they have a heart and sit down with their workforce to talk about decent workplace arrangements," Rebecca Reilly said. The workers protested outside the Schwartz Family ownedhotel in Pitt St at their shift change on Tuesday at 4 pm.
Contact the Schwartz FamilyHotel guests and passers by will be asked to contact the Schwartz Family and let them know that the workers have support in their fight for respect and dignity.Call the Schwartz Family Co on 02 9369 0000 and leave a polite message about workers' rights to be treated with dingity. Or send an e-mail to sfc@schwartz.com.au with a copy to the union at: nswlhmu@lhmu.org.au
