AEC OKs union campaign

Date: 21 June 2007

Jeff Lawrence, ACTU Secretary-elect

Jeff Lawrence, ACTU Secretary-elect

The ACTU has welcomed a decision by the Australian Electoral Commission that the union campaign against the Federal Government's IR laws has not breached the electoral act.

"This decision vindicates the ACTU and shows that our campaign against the Howard Government's unfair IR laws is proper and legitimate,"ACTU Secretary-elect Jeff Lawrence said.

" The AEC has rejected the spurious complaint it received last week from Special Minister of State Gary Nairn concerning an internal union campaign document that was reported in the media.

" The real so-called 'dirty tricks' being perpetrated in this election campaign are those of the Howard Government.

" Not only has the Government wasted $60 million of taxpayers' money to promote unfair IR laws that it has now changed three times.

" The Government has also dropped the name 'WorkChoices' in a blatant move to confuse the Australian public about its IR laws.

" The Prime Minister's latest dirty trick is pressuring Australia's business community to cough up shareholders' money for an $11 million propaganda campaign in support of his unfair IR laws.

" The business propaganda campaign is to be run by notorious Liberal Party pollsters Mark Textor and Lynton Crosby."
