CFMEU's McDonald vindicated

Date: 05 July 2007

A concrete panel has violently disintegrated and collapsed on the 16th floor of the notorious Q-Con construction site in St Georges Tce Perth, vindicating claims by CFMEU Assistant Secretary Joe McDonald that the site was 'a disaster waiting to happen'.

"I am so glad that no one has been killed or injured here today," said Mr McDonald.

"Sixteen floors above the Perth CBD we have had concrete panels collapse, exposing up to 50 workers and the general public to potential death and serious injury.

"My main concern has always been the safety of these workers and while some may say this puts into perspective my colourful use of language on the site earlier, my concern has always been that the site is made safe. This incident is a disgrace."

The Q-Con site was the centre of media attention recently over an incident where Mr McDonald was attempting to hold a meeting with workers over safety matters.

"On that day I swore. Today tonnes of concrete collapsed from the 16th floor. Which one of these is more serious?"
