Hearing Aid Silences WorkersDate: 20 July 2007
Workers at the hearing device manufacturer, Cochlear, have been told to keep quiet or face reprimands after speaking out about their company's refusal to respect their wish for union representation. The workers were issued with the warning after the result of a second vote by workers, rejecting an agreement with their company that excluded their right to union representation. The result of the ballot was written up in the Sydney Morning Herald. An AMWU delegate at the site was singled out for special mention after putting his views to the paper. Under the Howard Government's unfair industrial relations laws, the company does not have to respect the results of a democratic ballot, unless the result suits them. Join the campaign to back Cochlear workersMeanwhile the AMWU has launched a website campaign calling for members of the public to email Cochlear management and encourage them to respect simple values like workplace democracy.Over 1000 emails have already been sent.
You can help support these workers by sending off a LabourStart/AMWU protest here.
