New directions in labour law

Date: 01 August 2007

Australia's leading industrial lawyers and labour market researchers will be meeting in Sydney this Friday, 3rd August, at the Hilton Hotel to share their understandings of Australia's rapidly changing system of labour law.

They will be contributing to the 16th Annual Labour Law Conference organised jointly by Sydney Law School, Sydney University and the Workplace Research Centre.

Conference papers

The Conference will hear papers prepared on critical issues such:

- the legal and practical implications of last year's High Court Decision on the Work Choices legislation (Prof Ron McCallum - University of Sydney)

- the new role of industrial tribunals (Federal tribunal perspective: Dep Pres Jonathan Hamburger - AIRC, State perspective: Justice Michael Walton - NSW IRC) - the nature and role of the new fairness test (John Kovacic, Deputy Director & David Rushton - GM Legal, Workplace Authority nee Office of the Employment Advocate, and Dr Jill Murray - LaTrobe University)

- collective bargaining under the Trades Practices Act (Prof Joe Issac - University of Melbourne) The Independent Contractors Act + Future of S106 - Peter Punch (Carroll & O'Dea) - the new role the common law in protecting workers rights (Dr Joellen Riley - UNSW) - new directions in the law governing Occupational Health and Safety (Professor Michael Quinlan - UNSW, and Professor Neil Gunningham - ANU)

- life after Work Choices: (Chris Platt - Australian Mines and Minerals Association, and Dr John Buchanan - University of Sydney).

Also included in the conference kit is a paper on Beyond Voodoo Economics and Backlash Social Policy: Where next for working life research and policy? John Buchanan, Ian Watson and Chris Briggs, University of Sydney, Iain Campbell RMIT University.
