CFMEU Comments on EconoTech Report

Date: 01 August 2007

Recently the ABCC released an economic analysis of productivity in the building sector by controversial consultants Econotech.

The announcement was timed to coincide with the ALP's Housing Affordability Summit.

Principally the analysis points to a closing gap between productivity in the (largely unionised) commercial construction sector and the (largely un-unionised) housing sector.

The implication it draws - seized on by the Howard Government for political purposes - is that the ABCC is having a positive effect on productivity.

This argument is presented even though the ABCC plays no role what so ever in non-commercial construction.

A detailed analysis of the report is currently being under taken by economists for the CFMEU.

This short paper represents some initial problems with the Econotech report
