Foster’s not giving sporting chanceDate: 31 August 2007
Workers at Foster's Yatala brewery in Queensland are poised to step up their campaign for a fair Union Collective Agreement. Whilst fair play is a key element in the sports Foster's sponsors, including the NRL, the World Professional Surfing tour and the Formula One Grand Prix, the company is ignoring fair play when it comes to its workers. This week, the workers and hundreds of supporters will target a high profile sporting event to get the message out.
No Union Agreement for Fosters brewery workers in QueenslandAll Profit, No Share?Foster's decision to continue to pay its workers at Yatala significantly less than wages paid at other breweries, including its own interstate breweries, flies in the face of an announcement on 28 August of close to a $1 billion profit. The company announcements claim a 17% increase in profit whilst Yatala workers are paid up to 35% less than other brewery workers.
International Foster's Employees' SupportWorkers at the Yatala brewery have received strong support from brewery workers in the UK and Canada who brew Foster's products.Union members in these countries have recently settled big disputes over agreements which their companies, that brew Foster's products, tried to impose on them. Since then those workers have expressed their full support for the Yatala workers.
Community Support BuildingRallies outside Foster's marketing headquarters have continued in atrocious weather, sending a clear message to the company of just how strongly workers and the community feel about the rights of the Yatala brewery workers.
