Spanish inquisition for TWU?

Date: 26 September 2007

News this afternoon that Minister for Workplace Relations Joe Hockey has announced no fewer than 8 inquiries into the Transport Workers' Union is McCarthyism gone mad.

NSW & National Secretary Tony Sheldon: "The TWU has nothing to hide, as we've stated over the past few days via various media outlets and statements.

"This scare campaign, led by the Minister for WorkChoices, is nothing more than a desperate attempt by a desperate government to hang on to power.

"As soon as the Union became aware of the allegations aired on Channel 9's "Sunday" program, we commissioned a full independent review by internationally renowned accounting firm Deloitte.

"For the Minister for WorkChoices to claim that the TWU is misleading its' members is a farce from the person who has stripped away the rights of working Australian
families.

"Joe Hockey has failed to stand up for Owner Drivers in Western Australia and other states- leaving them with little protection from unscrupulous clients.

"I am proud to lead the Transport Workers' Union, and while we will cooperate with the government's 8 inquiries, this is nothing more than blatant union bashing.

"I'm surprised Mr Hockey hasn't invited Interpol, the FBI and Scotland Yard on what is an attack on a Union which is making a difference for transport workers across the
country," said Mr Sheldon.
