ALP child initiatives great: Union

Date: 24 October 2007

"Today's announcement by the ALP addresses two of the most important indicators of quality child care: workforce training and staff-to-child ratios in Long Day Care", says Louise Tarrant, National Secretary of the LHMU. The LHMU represents Australia's children's services workers.

"Australian parents are deeply concerned about the quality of child care services.

Answer parent concerns about welfare of their kids

"Creating nationally consistent quality standards will improve staff-to-child ratios and group sizes throughout Australia, which will be a great relief to parents concerned about the welfare and development of their children.

"The quality ranking of centres will tell parents whether staff levels, groups sizes and staff qualifications are good enough at their centres.

"We welcome the ALP's National Early Years Workforce Strategy to increase recruitment and retention in the children's services workforce, without whom quality child care is impossible.

Supporting talented childcare workers

"Building a career path for children's services workers, with a nationally coordinated program for recognition of prior learning will be a great help to the talented and committed children's service workers.

Three major issues for childcare

"It's also great to see a major political party commit to spending an additional $1.5 billion on child care. The prospect of some fee relief for Australian families is encouraging, as is the proposal to pay the Child Care Tax Rebate quarterly.

"We've identified three major issues in child care nationally, namely accessibility, quality and affordability. These announcements go a long way to addressing these."
