Builder admits scare campaignDate: 25 October 2007
The head of one of Australia's largest construction companies has exposed the fact that industry employer groups are running a massive scare election campaign by conceding the sky will not fall in under a Labor Government. The statements by John Holland Group's managing director David Stewart adds weight to the CFMEU¹s argument that some construction employer groups are running a politically partisan campaign against the ALP.
Big backer of Howard laws lets cat out of the bag'It is interesting to note that John Holland has been one of the strongest supporters and users of the Howard Government's IR laws. Now they have let the cat out of the bag,' CFMEU national secretary Dave Noonan said today.'But even this company is beginning to hedge its bets with the election and is starting to disown the scare campaign.
Sky will fall in under Rudd Labor - a dishonest scare campaign'John Holland's admissions put the spotlight on the dishonest scare campaign the employer groups and the Australian Building and Construction Commission are running.'On the one hand we have these bodies saying the sky will fall in under a Labor Government -- but one of the nation¹s biggest construction companies, a company that has recently been hostile to unions, is disowning these bogus claims.
Stop going into battle for John Howard's causes'It's about time the construction industry employer associations grew up and stopped fighting the Liberal Party's battles for them.'The CFMEU is ready and willing to work with any company that respects workers' rights to decent wages and conditions, a safe workplace and the right to union representation.'
