Fosters workers want union agreement

Date: 09 November 2007

Fosters workers at Yatala in Queensland have again voted to take industrial action this week in their fight for a union collective agreement.

Two four-hour stoppages were held yesterday and today, with more planned over the next few weeks.

Plot failed to increase numbers for a company vote

AMWU organiser, Alan Lacey, said the workers were determined to keep campaigning until they got a collective agreement.

"The straw that broke the camel's back was when management brought in 30 casual workers to increase the numbers that would vote for the company agreement.

"It didn't work. They still didn't get the vote and their own workforce were disgusted by their tactics."

Tell Foster's to respect Yatala workers' right to a union agreement!

Increased union membership

Mr Lacey said that despite threats of lockouts and other tactics designed to scare the workers into submission, the workers are standing firm and resolved to see this through.

"We have actually increased union membership on the site as a result of this dispute and it's given us the extra strength we need on this issue."

Employer uses WorkChoices to continue to ignore workforce

The dispute between the brewery and the workers, members of the AMWU, the ETU and the LHMU, has been dragging on for several months due to the company's refusal to agree to a union collective agreement.

AMWU Qld Secretary, Andrew Dettmer, said this was another classic WorkChoices dispute where the employer can go on forever, refusing to be reasonable with workers.

"It's happening with AMWU members at Cochlear, here at Yatala and in many places. The laws just help employers try to scare the workers back to work, because there is nothing to get the boss to do the right thing."
